PUT-IN-BAY- SANDUSKY OHIO
Just north of Sandusky, Ohio in Lake Erie is South Bass Island, home to Put-in-Bay. This 2 by 4 mile island is home to some of the best walleye and perch fishing around as well as great shopping, restaurants and nightlife. While on the island enjoy a variety of water sports – rent jet skis, kayaks, power boats or even take an adventurous parasail over the waters of Lake Erie!
The easiest way to get to the island is via Jet Express from Sandusky Ohio. This 40 mph ferry is one of the fastest around and also offers a narrated history tour of the island. Parking is very limited on the island, so we recommend arriving via ferry and getting around by taxi, golf cart or bikes.
Put-in-Bay is home to a free antique car museum as well as an island tour train that offers one hour tours of local historic sites. Visit the Crystal Cave to see the world’s largest geode on record located on the grounds of the Heinemann Winery. This family business has been in operation since 1888 and offers winery tours and samples as well as the geode tour.
Take the kids to Kimberly’s Carousel, a historic wooden carousel built in 1917 featuring local scenes painted on it. Kids will also enjoy putt-putt golf at War of 18 Holes, a miniature golf course with a war of 1812 theme. South Bass Island is home to Perry’s Cave, used for drinking water by Commodore Perry in the War of 1812, and Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial, a tribute to peace between the United States and Canada.
For those who just want to enjoy the lake and beach, be sure to visit South Bass Island State Park where you will find a fishing pier, stone beach, playground, picnic area and refreshment stand. Jet ski rentals are available at the state park.
