Merry Go Round Museum

merry-go-roundA trip to Ohio is incomplete without a visit to the Merry Go Round Museum where you can ride the historic 1939 Allen Herschell carousel to the sounds of original organ music.

The carousel frame was acquired by the museum in 1991, and over the next few years, museum staff has painstakingly restored and recreated it to original condition. The frame arrived without any of the original animals, and has since been furnished with pieces from private collections as well as pieces owned by the museum. Each animal has been carefully restored and hand painted. The merry go round itself has been painted, each panel featuring scenery much like old time carousels. The horses and animals are county fair style animals, many hand carved.

The museum has a program where carousel animals are restored, often using the historic tools of early craftsmen. The Merry Go Round Museum’s purpose is to preserve the history and art of the craft of carousel construction. Every year, museum volunteers create one new animal that visitors can view in process throughout the year. It is then auctioned off to raise funds for the preservation of historic merry go round pieces.
